Popcorn Mushroom vs. Butterfly: What's the Difference?

Popcorn Mushroom vs. Butterfly : quelle est la différence ?

At Twinpop , we love popcorn in all its forms (especially when it's French, healthy, and natural!). But did you know that there are several varieties of popcorn? And especially two main ones: butterfly and mushroom. We'll explain everything!

Popcorn: a very special variety 🌽

Popcorn doesn't come from the same corn we eat on the cob or in cans. It's a specific type of corn, called Zea mays everta , that can explode under heat and become that crunchy cloud we love.

But depending on the variety of grain used (and sometimes the cooking method), popcorn does not "pop" the same way.

The butterfly popcorn 🦋

The butterfly is the most common, especially in cinemas. When it pops, the grain forms several irregular "wings". The result: a lighter, more airy shape, with a very crispy texture. It is ideal for savory recipes.

You will find it in the following Twinpop recipes : Truffle + Black Pepper, Pink Berries + Sea Salt, Thyme + Lemon, Seaweed + Sea Salt, Goat Cheese + Honey.

The mushroom popcorn 🍄

The mushroom, on the other hand, has a much rounder and more compact shape—a bit like a small ball. It is denser and more resistant , which makes it ideal for gourmet and sweet coatings like caramel or chocolate.

This is the mushroom we use at Twinpop for all our sweet recipes : Caramel+Salted Butter and Chocolate+Caramel: its plump side is perfect for receiving a nice layer of caramel without breaking. 😋

And what about Twinpop?

We select the best varieties of corn for each recipe. For fans of sweet and crunchy popcorn , we rely on 100% natural mushroom popcorn, grown without GMOs. For lovers of light, salty popcorn , butterfly popcorn comes into play.

And you, are you more of a  #TeamButterfly or #TeamMushroom? 😉
